U.S. firm to drill for new oil in Bahrain this year

ABU DHABI Ñ A U.S. energy major plans to explore for crude oil by late 2009.   

The U.S. firm Occidental intends to begin digging the first oil field in Bahrain in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The project has been part of an oil exploration deal that Bahrain has signed with Occidental and Thailand's PTT Exploration and Production.

In February 2009, Occidental completed the geological study and seismic survey to explore for energy.

Under the project, Occidental and PTT have been awarded rights to explore three out of four Bahraini blocks.

Bahraini Energy Minister Abdul Hussein Al Mirza said Occidental would drill three wells and operate Blocks 3 and 4. Al Mirza said PTT would operate Block 2, located offshore in the north of Bahrain and which covers 2,228 square kilometers.
