Gadhafi's talk of nationalizing Libyan oil dismissed by U.S. majors

WASHINGTON Ñ Major U.S. energy firms are unaffected by Libya's warning to nationalize its oil sector.

U.S. executives said the threats by Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi appeared to be directed for domestic consumption. They said Gadhafi's remarks had little significance amid the sharp decline in the price of crude oil.

"A year ago, everybody would be scared," an executive said. "But today, it's a buyer's market."

The executives said U.S. companies, led by ExxonMobil, did not expect disruptions in energy exploration and development programs in 2009.

Tripoli, however, has been pressuring such U.S. oil companies as ConocoPhillips, Hess and Marathon Oil to reduce their production share in at least one major energy project in the North African state, Middle East Newsline reported.
