LONDON Ñ A Russian energy subsidiary has won an energy exploration
contract in Algeria.
Gazprom Netherlands BV has been awarded rights to explore Algeria's
onshore El Assel concession. The concession, located in the Berkine basin in
Algeria, was awarded by the state-owned energy monopoly Sonatrach.
"According to provisional estimates, the recoverable oil reserves of the
said area amount to some 30 million tons," Gazprom said. "El Assel includes
three blocks covering a total of 3,083 square kilometers."

Executives said this marked Gazprom's first project in Algeria, a
leading defense client of Moscow.
In 2006 Gazprom and Sonatrach signed a
memorandum of understanding meant to promote joint energy projects in
Algeria and Russia.
