Israel kills senior Hamas operative sought after suicide attacks

RAMALLAH Ñ Members of an Israeli police commando force tracked and killed a Hamas operative in the Hebron-area village of Dura on May 28.

The operative, identified as Abdul Majid Dudin, was said to have been the commander of the Hamas military wing, Izzedin Kassam, in the southern West Bank.

"We will reach all terrorists who killed Israeli civilians," Israeli Brig. Gen. Noam Tibon, commander of the military's Judea and Samaria division, said.

Officials said Dudin, 45, was responsible for numerous suicide bombings in Israel. In 1995, the Palestinian Authority imprisoned Dudin for five years, Middle East Newsline reported. He was released during the start of the Palestinian insurgency.

The Israeli military said Dudin was responsible for the killing of 10 Israelis and the injury of hundreds of others. A military statement said Dudin was head of the Hamas military network in the area of Mount Hebron.

"Many of those working with Dudin were arrested and imprisoned over the years, while he was able to hide in various locations and evade arrest until this morning," the military said in a May 28 statement. [The killing of Dudin was followed by a major Palestinian Authority security operation against Hamas in the West Bank city of Kalkilya. Palestinian sources said at least five people, most of them Hamas operatives, were injured in the shootout on May 30.]

Dudin was said to have planned to attack an Israeli train that was traveling from Tel Aviv to Beersheba. He was also said to have ordered Hamas attacks on Israeli vehicles in the West Bank and southern Israel.

"Among the senior terrorists who worked with Duddin, were Yehya Ayash, Mohi Eddin Sharif, Ibrahim Hamed and Saleh Talakhme," the military said.
