Private security killed in Green Zone ambush

BAGHDAD Ñ Two Western security contractors have been killed in an ambush in Iraq.

The two security personnel, an Australian and a Briton, were ambushed in Baghdad's Green Zone on Aug. 9, Middle East Newsline reported. The Green Zone, which hosts foreign embassies, parliament and U.S. military headquarters, has been regarded as the most secure area in Iraq.

Private security contractors have played a leading role in the protection of embassies, military bases, reconstruction projects and VIPs in Iraq.

"We are working closely with the Iraqi authorities to investigate the circumstances of their deaths," the British firm ArmorGroup said.

The two men were identified as Paul McGuigan and Darren Hoare, a British national and an Australian, respectively. ArmorGroup, which also operates in Bahrain and Lebanon, has been a leading security contractor in Iraq.

"Their next of kin have been informed and we are supporting them as much as we can in these tragic circumstances," ArmorGroup spokesman Patrick Toyne-Sewell said.
