Iran steps up gasoline production in preparation for sanctions

NICOSIA Ñ Iran has launched an emergency plan meant to maintain its gasoline supply in anticipation of Western sanctions.

Officials said Iran's Oil Ministry has ordered steps to bolster gasoline production at the nation's nine major refineries. They said the refineries would increase capacity immediately, Middle East Newsline reported.

"The implementation of the urgent plan for gasoline production will start at the zero hour tonight [midnight Oct. 25]," an official told Iran's Fars News Agency on Oct. 24.

The plan was meant to rapidly ensure a domestic reserve of gasoline as the U.S. Congress passed legislation that banned companies from selling fuel to Iran.

Teheran, which acquires up to 25 million liters per day from abroad, imports 40 percent of its gasoline and fuel requirements.
