United Arab Emirates police radars going green

ABU DHABI Ñ The United Arab Emirates has begun using radars powered by solar energy.

Officials said the radars would be operated by police in the Abu Dhabi emirate, Middle East Newsline reported. The radar was identified as Mesta and manufactured by France's Sagem Securite, part of the Safran group.

"Thanks to our tailored, innovative and durable safety solutions, Sagem SŽcuritŽ is building a long-term partnership with Abu Dhabi Police," Sagem chairman Jean-Paul Jainsky said.

Sagem, one of the first companies to use a radar system using renewable energy, has delivered an unspecified number of solar-powered radars to Abu Dhabi police. Officials said the Mesta was already deployed on the highway between Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia.

The radars, powered by solar panels, use Doppler technology. Officials said they operate independently and at all times of day.

"The choice of this type of system by the United Arab Emirates confirms their solid local commitment to green energies," Jainsky said.
