U.S. alerts Americans after rise in attacks on Western tourists in Egypt

CAIRO Ñ The United States has warned Americans to be vigilant following a wave of attacks on Westerners in Egypt.

The embassy said Westerners in Cairo have been targeted by unidentified Islamic attackers. The assaults began on Feb. 22 when a bomb exploded near a group of Westerners in a Cairo market frequented by tourists, Middle East Newsline reported.

Five days later, an American was stabbed in broad daylight. On Feb. 28, a firebomb was hurled in Cairo's subway system. No injuries were reported in the firebombing.

In late February a French student was killed in a bombing in Cairo.

"These events do not appear to be connected, but there is some indication that additional incidents are planned," the embassy said on March 2.

"The Egyptian government has visibly increased security levels in the downtown area, around major tourist sites and at public venues such as shopping centers," the embassy said.

"We advise Americans to take great care in visiting these sites, to remain strictly alert to their surroundings, and to practice good personal security measures."

The embassy said Islamic insurgents have targeted major tourist sites in Cairo as well as the pyramids. Tourist buses and hotels have also been attacked.

"Travelers should use caution when visiting destination resorts and hotels without significant physical setback and security procedures," the embassy said.
