ABU DHABI — Saudi Arabia has awarded a $500 million contract to a
South Korean firm to construct a refinery in the Arab kingdom.
The state-owned Saudi Aramco awarded Samsung Engineering a contract to
build a refinery in Ras Tanura for the production of diesel fuel. Officials
said this was the first such project in the kingdom and would reduce sulfur
dioxide output from diesel.

Executives said Samsung Engineering would build a diesel
hydro-desulfurization plant that could process 100,000 barrels of diesel per
day. The facility was scheduled to be completed by June 2010.
The project would be conducted by Samsung Saudi Arabia, established by
Samsung Engineering in 1999. Samsung has been a leading contractor in eight
major energy projects in the kingdom.
