    Sudan rebels storm base guarding China-run oil fields

    CAIRO — Sudanese rebels have renewed attacks on crude oil fields operated by China.

    The rebel Justice and Equality Movement reported attacking a Sudanese Army outpost in a Chinese-operated oil field in Heglig in central Sudan. The Darfour rebel movement said Tuesday's assault sparked a flight of 1,000 Sudanese soldiers.

    The Khartoum regime as well as the United Nations reported a rebel attack. But the Sudanese military said the rebels were repulsed.

    Darfour rebels have warned China to withdraw its oil presence from Sudan. Khartoum produces and estimated 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
