TEL AVIV — Prime Minister Ehud Barak is under increasing pressure from supporters to quit his bid for reelection.

Instead, Barak is being urged to allow his rival, Shimon Peres, to continue the race for prime minister against Likud challenger Ariel Sharon. The supporters said Peres has a much better chance than Barak to defeat Sharon.

Sharon has a lead of up to 20 points over Barak in the latest polls published on Friday. In contrast, Peres beats Sharon in some of the polls. Elections for prime minister are scheduled for Feb. 6.

Barak has so far refused to considering quitting the race. Peres has disassociated himself from the campaign to have him replace Barak. At the same time, Peres has refused to call on his supporters to end the campaign. Aides to Barak have blamed Peres for the campaign.
