Iran set for 5-day naval exercise

NICOSIA — Iran plans a major naval exercise in the Persian Gulf and
the Sea of Oman.
Iranian officials said the Unity-80 exercise begins on Friday and
will last five days. The maneuvers will comprise three stages.
Navy commander Rear Admiral Abbas Mohtaj said the navy will test
weapons, electronic systems and conduct commando operations. Mohtaj said the
exercise will also test war tactics and the movement of warships.
Three Iranian submarines bought from Russia will participate in the
exercise, the naval commander said. He said naval vessels will move through
Iranian territorial waters in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea.
