NICOSIA — Iran's capital has again been rocked by explosion in an
attack attributed to insurgents supported by neighboring Iraq.
Iranian officials said five mortars shells exploded near a military base
in northern Teheran on Sunday. They accused the Baghdad-based Mujahedeen
Khalq of responsibility.
The target appeared to be the base of the Islamic Republic Guard Corps.
The corps has been the target of several Mujahadeen attacks.
There were no casualties reported. But the Mujahadeen claimed that
several officers were injured or killed.
Over the last few months, Iran and Iraq have met to agree on terminating
support for insurgencies. Officials said this was a key demand by Teheran
for a reconciliation with Baghdad.
Iranian sources told the London-based A-Sharq Al Awsat that the bombings
were a message from Iraq that the informal ceasefire between the two
countries had ended.
Hours before the attack, Iran announced an agreement with Italy to fight
such groups as the Mujahedeen.
