LONDON -- The United States is seeking British approval regarding the
use of a base in northern England as part of a U.S. anti-missile defense
system.
British defense officials said London has discussed the issue with the
Pentagon. But they said a formal request was not submitted.
The London-based Financial Times said on Tuesday that the United States
is exploring the use of a British radar base in northern Yorkshire. The
daily said the government of British Prime Minister Tony Blair is likely to
approve any formal U.S. request.
The U.S. anti-missile defense system has prompted concern in Europe and
anger in Russia. Russia said the system will prompt a new arms race and
Europe is concerned that U.S. anti-missile system will renew Cold War
tensions.
The newspaper said the U.S. request might be delayed in wake of last
week's failure of the anti-missile defense system.
