WASHINGTON -- The United States has arrested another Algerian
national suspected of being linked to a ring that is believed to have
planned a millennium terrorist campaign in the country.
The latest suspect, Abdel Hakim Tizegha, was charged in a Seattle, Wash.
court with illegally reentering the United States from Canada and avoiding
examination by immigration agents. In a hearing on Monday, Tizegha was
ordered held without bail.
Authorities said Tizegha was deported in 1998 from the United States and
last November slipped into the United States. On Dec. 24, he was arrested by
INS agents in Bellevue, Wash.
Law enforcement officials said Tizegha is suspected of being linked to
Ahmed Ressam, arrested on Dec. 14 when he tried to enter the United States
with explosives.
Another Algerian suspect is Abdelmajed Dahoumane, charged with being an
accomplice of Ressam. Canadian and U.S. authorities are searching Dahmoumane
last seen in a Vancouver motel.
A Canadian woman, Lucia Garofalo, and an Algerian national were arrested
Dec. 19 in Vermont as they tried to enter the United States in a car that
allegedly showed traces of having carried explosives.
In New York, federal agents arrested another Algerian, Abdel Ghani,
suspected of being part of the Ressam group.
