TEL AVIV — Israel’s military as well as other intelligence agencies have concluded that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sent hundreds of operatives to Sinai as well as the neighboring Gaza Strip. They said IRGC was directing arms smuggling as well as training Palestinian and Bedouin insurgents to conduct separate and joint operations.
“IRGC believes that the Palestinians and the Bedouins must work together, and that Sinai must become a haven for fighters in the Gaza Strip,” an official said.
Officials said IRGC expanded its presence in Sinai and the Gaza Strip in 2011. They said IRGC was responsible for financing and directing the flow of heavy weapons, particularly missiles and rockets, from Libya and Sudan through Sinai and to the Gaza Strip.
IRGC was said to be working with most of the Palestinian militias in the Gaza Strip as well as the Hamas regime. Officials cited the Iranian-sponsored Islamic Jihad and Popular Resistance Committees, both of which maintain a presence in northeastern Sinai.
